IIM Helps Desert Vision Optometry Ditch Their Third-Party Proprietary Website for a Responsive Open Source SolutionWritten by Sean Planck
For years, Desert Vision Optometry utilized a third party, proprietary website solution meant for Optometry practices. However, as responsive technology became more and more necessary and fresh content the key to SEO, they felt it was time to upgrade.
The old website looked... okay. But it was little clunky to navigate. Its overall look was fairly modern, but lacked the polish to accurately portray any high end business. Updating the site was less than easy. And there was a monthly subscription fee. This pretty well determined the goals of the rebuild:
- Updated look and feel
DVO carries some of the most fashionable and chic eyewear designs on the market, so the look of the site needed to be ultra-contemporary, and focused on their photos.
- Responsive Mobile Compatibility
The site need to be perfect on all mobile devices. Mobile traffic now accounts for more than desktop traffic. In response, Google now limits a website's visibility on mobile search if it is not mobile responsive. Of equal importance is providing the visitor with a perfect user interface no matter how they access the site.
- Content Management
The client needed to have the ability to update and add content to the site at will without programming knowledge.
- Eliminate monthly subscription fees
Some of the most robust content management systems in the world are Open Source, which means non-proprietary code, no subscription fees, and a development community of thousands of skilled developers. Finding a solution that replaced their previous proprietary solution was easy. For this project, we chose Joomla.
With the foundation in place, it was time to add the magic bits that make a site special:
- Ajax contact form that stores submitted information
- Full width, responsive and sleek slideshows highlighting their amazing product line
- Accent animations to give the site a dynamic, polished feel upon arrival.
- Mobile-specific functionality like click-to-dial on phone numbers and swipe-navigated slideshows for smartphones and tablets.
The end result is a cutting edge, fully-responsive, fast loading website that projects the chic, contemporary image Desert Vision Optometry requires, and that will evolve with their business needs for years to come.
Local wedding minister Sallie Albertina had a pretty good website that had served her well for several years. Unfortunately, several years is like a century in internet time, and technology had simply passed her site's capabilities by. When the site was built, smartphone were rare, and web traffic from smartphones and tablets was marginal.
Fast forward to 2015: Smartphones and tablets now accounted for 40-60% of all website traffic, and Google was starting to move toward penalizing sites for not responding properly to mobile devices. This was enough to justify a new website that would accommodate Google's new standards. But Sallie also wanted to manage her own site and occasionally write a blog post. And add to her gallery. And track contact data. And edit services. And improve SEO... Essentially, her needs had grown, while her technology had fallen behind.

When the client came to Imagine It! Media with their new product, we got to work right away to build product awareness and provide an avenue for online sales to make the product available to the public before it's available at WalMart and Sally Beauty Supply.
We worked with local video production house Trick Dog Films to produce a short film explaining the benefits of the the product, and demonstrating its use in a salon here in Palm Springs.
Then, based on this film and the branding presented with the packaging, Imagine It! Media went to work on a robust ecommerce solution that would not only provide great exposure for the product, but also provide a smooth purchase process to ensure the highest conversion rate possible. We based the site on The Joomla! CMS, and used the HikaShop cart add-on. HikaShop was chosen for its ease of use by the clients as well as the customer, but also for its scalability. The shopping cart will accommodate wholesale sales pricing structure when the time comes, and has a built in Affiliate Marketing program so web publishers can make a small commission for promoting the product on their blog or page. It's a great ecommerce solution for growth minded ecommerce startups!
Do you have a product in development or a product line you'd like to start selling online? Or are you just unhappy with the ecommerce package you have in place currently? Let Imagine It Media put together an ecommerce solution tailored to your company's needs now and for the future!
Imagine It! Media recently launched a new website for the valley’s own Desert Business Association, the Coachella Valley’s only gay business association.
The DBA’s old site was in desperate need of a design update, and the association was not happy with Memberize, the membership platform that was the foundation of the site.
After researching the organization’s need, we recommended Wild Apricot, another turnkey membership platform meant for civic groups, chambers of commerce, and clubs and other community organizations.
We redesigned the site to give it more local flavor, while offering a more user-friendly layout.
Do you have a website that is outdated, or perhaps just wasn’t what you asked for from your developer? For whatever reason, sometimes you don’t need the site rebuilt, but just tweaked a bit. We understand. And, chances are, we can help.
Modern Misting Systems, a company that provides commercial and residential mist cooling systems based in Palm Desert, is perfect example.
They had an existing WordPress website that was a great online presence for the service end of their business. But they wanted to sell mist and fog systems and parts through the website for their do-it-yourself inclined customers and for those outside their service area. While their site was technically able to sell products, the shopping cart used was far too basic to be effective for any real ecommerce efforts, and offered no SEO friendliness whatsoever.
First we installed a full featured shopping cart that allowed for great optimization flexibility, and, unlike the previous cart, was fully integrated in Wordpress. Then we edited the layout of the front page to very clearly steer visitors between the ecommerce and service sections of the website.
The result was a website that did everything they asked, and offered their new ecommerce division a fighting chance. Here’s what they had to say about the finished product:
“I can’t tell you how pleased we are. We have gone with a number of different website companies, and you guys truly are the only ones that did what you said you would do. We really appreciate it!”

Seems like Facebook is everywhere, right? Wrong. But it will be soon…
Today Facebook announced that users will soon be able to embed public Facebook posts as easily as they can embed tweets and YouTube videos on websites, giving users the ability to stick their status updates in pages across the Web, and outside of Facebook. Photos, status updates, posts with hashtags, videos — all now can be embedded in pages on third-party sites outside of the social network.
"When embedded, posts can include pictures, videos, hashtags and other content," Facebook's Dave Capra wrote in a post on the site. "People can also Like and share the post directly from the embed."
The feature is being rolled out today on five sites -- first CNN, then Bleacher Report, Huffington Post, Mashable and People. Post embedding will be rolled out more widely in the coming weeks.
